Biography

This profile is part of the Labossiere Name Study.

Marie Louisa Rosaire Claude (Rose) was born at St-Hyacinthe on Oct. 10, 1895 [1] and she was baptized the the next day. She was the fourth child of ten and the third daughter of six for Joseph Napoleon Glaude and Marie Cleophee Albina Gagne.

1901 Canada Census z000169438 Quebec St. Hyacinthe C Providence Village Page 4 Lines 43-49: Napoleon Claude, 35; Albina Claude (Gagne), 33; five Claude children: Alice, 11; Albani, 9; Rose, 4; Marie, 3; Alda, 1. [2] Census date: April 4-5, 1901. Napoleon's brother, Alphonse Claude and family are next door.

In Sept. 1907, when Rose was not quite 12 years old, her family moved to the United States and settled at New Bedofrd, MA. They are found at the St. Albans border crossing, Vermont. [3] and the immigration file has also been found. [4]

Her family had one more child born in New Bedford, MA. but also lived briefly at Plainfield, CT. Sadly, three of the children had died young in Quebec, but the family is found in the 1910 U.S. census with the surviving seven children. [5] Rose is recorded as 17 years old, but in fact, she was only 14 at the time of the census, but she is already working in the woolen mill along with her older brother, Albert, (Albany).

Her father died the next year, leaving their mother with seven children, ranging from 17 years to only 3. Rose Claude married soon after on January 07, 1913 [7] to Louis Dupuis. He was the son of Louis C. Dupuis and Olympe Gervais. Rose Claude and Louis Dupuis lived the remainder of their lives in and around New Bedford, MA and they had two children there.

1920 US Census Massachusetts Bristol New Bedford Ward 1 ED110, Sheet 2A, Lines 32-34: Rose Claude - Dupuis, 24; Louis Dupuis, 28; and son Louis Dupuis, Jr. aged 7. [8] Census date: Jan. 3, 1920.

By 1930, the family has moved slightly and are now at Acushnet. 1930 US Census Massachusetts, Bristol, Acushnet ED159, Sheet 19B, lines 98-100 G06ABCWLF Rose Claude - Dupuis, 34; Louis Dupuis, 38; and son Louis Dupuis, Jr. 17; daughter, Viola, 9; next page. [9] Census date: April 21, 1930.

Louis Dupuis died at Fairhaven, MA on June 24, 1966 and he was buried at Sacred Heart New Cemetery, in New Bedford. Rose Claude died December 22, 1981 and she was also buried at Sacred Heart New Cemetery, in New Bedford. [10] She was 86 years old.
