Career and Accomplishments

Clements, the son of Christopher Clements and Polly Fraim and the grandson of John Clemans (a Revolutionary War veteran), was born in Clementsville, Tennessee's Clay County. He studied medicine at Spencer, Tennessee's Burritt College and a private school before starting his career there. He later married Matilda Harlan, with whom he had four children: Mollie, Carlos, Carolyn, and Fred. His first wife, Nancy Jones Clements, passed away in 1858.

Clements served as a doctor for the First Regiment, Tennessee Mounted Volunteer Infantry, during the American Civil War (Union).

Clements served in the Thirty-seventh Congress from March 4, 1861, to March 3, 1863, after being elected as a Unionist.

In 1866 and 1867, he served in the Tennessee House of Representatives. He began his professional career again and started a school on his property for the residents of that region of the Cumberland highlands. 

On November 7, 1913, Clements passed away from pneumonia while being treated for senility at Central State Hospital in Lakeland, Jefferson County, Kentucky (age 80 years, 319 days).

He is buried in Glasgow, Kentucky's, Municipal Cemetery.[1]
