James Cocking was born on 5th April 1842 at St Ives, Cornwall, England. [1]

Christening

James, son of James and Elizabeth (Warren) Cocking was christened on 1st May 1842 at St Ives Primitive Methodist Church, Fore Street, St Ives, Cornwall, England. [1]

Family Life

James Cocking's father, James, died in October 1847, aged 32, [2] and was buried at St Ives, Cornwall, England on 24 October 1847[3]

1851-1861 Census

On 30 March 1851, 33 year old Elizabeth Cocking, widowed in 1847, and two of her sons, James (9) and Thomas (5) are living with Elizabeth's parents, Thomas Warren, 54 year old sailmaker and his wife, Elizabeth (Bassett) (59) at Teetotal Row, St Ives, Cornwall, England. Also in the household are Elizabeth's sister, Matilda Warren (17), and a nephew, William Warren (4).[4]
On 7th March 1861, Elizabeth Cocking, 43 year old fisherman's widow, is living at Teetotal Row, St Ives, Cornwall, England with two sons: James, 19 year old fisherman, and Thomas, 15 year old scholar. [5]

Marriage

Selina Bottrell, 22 year old Spinster from St Ives, daughter of James Bottrell, Miner, married James Cocking, 21 year old fisherman, also from St Ives, the son of James Cocking, fisherman on 4th October 1863 at the Church of St Ia, St Ives, Cornwall, England. [6]

1871-1881 Census

In the census taken on 2nd March 1871, 29 year old Selina Cocking and her husband, James Cocking, a 29 year old fisherman, were living at Island Row, St Ives, Cornwall, England. They have 3 children: James (abbreviated to 'Jas', aged 5), Catherine (7) and Matthew (1). Also in the household is Selina's brother, Thomas Botrell, a fisherman, aged 42.[7]
On 3 March 1881, James, 38 year old fisherman and his wife Selina, aged 39, are residing at 15, Island Road, St Ives, Cornwall, England with 5 of their children: Catherine M. (17), James (15), Thomas W. (8), Matthew C. (5), Selina (1). Selina's brother, Thomas Bottrell, a 52 year old, unmarried fisherman is living with them. [8]

Occupation

James' boat was the SS .452 "J.M.T." - named after three of his sons. He was Captain of the School of Navigation at St Ives, Cornwall, England. [9]

Marriage

James Cocking married Mary Hollow towards the end of 1886. The marriage was registered in the Penzance District, Cornwall, England. [12]

1891 Census

On 5th March 1891, James Cocking, 49 year old St Ives fisherman, his second wife, Mary (Hollow) Cocking, and three of their children - Thomas W., 18 year old fisherman, Matthew M.B., 15 year old fisherman, and 9-year old scholar, William W. - are living at Carncrouse Road, St Ives, Cornwall, England. Marriage

James' second wife, Mary died in the second half of 1891. [14] He remarried the following year. His third wife was Grace Ninnis. [15]

1901-1911 Census

When the census was taken on 31st March 1901, James (58- fisherman) and Grace Cocking (47) and James' youngest son, William W. (19-joiner's apprentice), are living at Carncrows Road, St Ives, Cornwall. [16]
On 2nd March 1911, James (68), Grace (58) and son, William W. Cocking (29), a carpenter, are still living at Carncrows Road, St Ives, Cornwall. [17]

Death

James Cocking died at St Ives, Cornwall, England, aged 85, on 23rd May 1927.[18]

Burial

James Cocking was buried at Barnoon Cemetery, St Ives, Cornwall, England in May 1927. [18]
