Simeon Cogburn and Sarah Quattlebaum had been married before August of 1850. They had no children at the date of the census.
In the 1850 U. S. Census (15 August 1850) [1] Simeon and his wife Sarah were living in Edgefield District of Edgefield County, South Carolina next to the family of her father John Quattlebaum. Simeon was twenty-five and had real estate valued at $600. He was farming.
On October 8, 1857, Sarah's father John Quattlebaum signed a will in which Sarah ad Simeon were mentioned. 4th I give to my beloved daughter, Sarah Cogburn, one female slave Malissa, assessed at seven hundred ($700) dollars; sixty acres of land assessed at three hundred ($300) dollars, all of which they now have in their lawful possession. The property description of property in the will mentions, The Eastern portion of my homestead tract where a line shall have been run from the North Eastern corner of Simeon Cogburn's land, [2] John's wife Elizabeth and son James were to be the executors of the will. The sixty acres of land that Simeon owned had apparently been given to Simeon when he married Sarah.
In the U. S. Census (6 June 1860) [3] the family was listed in Saluda Regiment of Edgefield. I don't thik they had moved, but probably the political boundries had changed. Simeon was thirty-four and was farming. His real estate value was $1200 and his personal property was valued at $6000. The personal property was probably based on the five slaves and two slave houses that are listed in the slave schedule for that year. [4]
John Quattlebaum died in December 1865. Simeon Cogburn was qualified as Executor on 19th January 1866 .
In the 1870 U. S. Census (20 July 1870) [5] the family was listed in Gray, Edgefield County, South Carolina. Simeon was still farming and had real estate valued at $2811 and personal estate valued at $1540. Simeon's mother-in-law, Elizabeth Quattlebaum, was living with the family. She had inherited a large share of the estate. Simeon and Sarah were listed with six children in the household: John Q. age 16; Benjamin W, age 13; Elizabeth Z age 11; Jame A. age 9 and Luroy age 1.
Simeon died in January 1880, and was listed in the mortality schedule for 1880.[6]
