Biography

Sarah was the oldest daughter of John Quattlebaum and Elizabeth Youngblood Quattlebaum. She was born in about 1832 in Edgefield County South Carolina.

In the 1840 U. S. Census [1] Sarah would be the daughter in the 5-9 age group.

She was married before the 1850 U. S. Census[2] and lived with her husband Simeon Cogburn next door to her parents in Edgefield County, South Carolina. Simeon was twenty-five and had real estate valued at $600. Sarah was eighteen. There were no children.

Sarah's father, John Quattlebaum, signed a will on 8 October 1857. The will mentions Sarah Cogburn. [3] It says 4th I give to my beloved daughter, Sarah Cogburn, one female slave Malissa, assessed at seven hundred ($700) dollars; sixty acres of land assessed at three hundred ($300) dollars, all of which they now have in their lawful possession. Sarah's brother, James, and brother-in-law, William Watkins, were named as the executors of the will.

In the 1860 U. S. Census (6 June 1860) [4] Sarah's family was still listed next to that of her father in Saluda Regiment, Edgefield County. They had three children age 6, 3 and one.

James Quattlebaum died before his father while serving in the Confederate Army. William and Mary Watkins had moved out of the area when John Quattlebaum died in 1865. On January 19, 1866, Sarah's husband, Simeon Cogburn was made executor of the will.

In the 1870 U. S. Census (20 July 1870) [5] the family was listed as living in Grey, Edgewood County. I think it was likely it was the same location but and just a different name. Sarah's mother Elizabeth was living with the family and she had inherited most of the estate of James Quattlebaum. Sarah and Simeon had four children in the household: Benjamin W. age 13; Elizabeth Z. age 11; James A. age 9 and Luroy B. age 1.

Sarah's husband, Simeon, died in January 1880. In the U. S. Census (22 June 1880) [6] Sarah was forty-eight years old and head of the family. She was listed as a farmer. Only two children remained at home. James A. Cogburn, age 19, was listed as a farm hand. Julian W. was six years old. Susan's mother was living nearby with James Belton Walton. James was the son of Sarah's sister Mary.

Research Notes

Sarah's birth year is estimated based on census records that would indicate she was born in 1832. Her marriage was prior to the 1850 U. S. Census, but exact date needs to be determined. Death information needs to be located.
