Census notation with commentary:

  • 1820 United States Federal Census on 7 August in Danville, Caledonia, Vermont. 1820: This is a tally only record. John Colby is the head and he would be 24 at the time. There was also an older man 26-44; a female under 10 and a female in the age category with John (16 thru 25).
  • 1830 United States Federal Census in Danville, Caledonia, Vermont. 1830: This is a tally only record. John Colby is the head. 5 total family members including the husband and wife in the 30-39 age group, 2 females 5-9 and 1 female 10-14.
  • 1840 United States Federal Census in Walden, Caledonia, Vermont. 1840: This is a tally only record. John Colby is the head. 7 total family members including the husband and wife in the 20-29 age group, 1 male under 5, 1 male 40-49, 1 female 5-9, 1 female 10-14, 1 female 15-19. This would seem to imply that the wife of John had died and a daughter and son-in-law (he had no sons of the proper age) were there living there. His son, who would have been less than 15 is not indicated here.
  • 1850 United States Federal Census on 21 September in Danville, Caledonia, Vermont. 1850: Brooks, John S. 34, farmer, head; May 24, wife; Abba P. 3, daughter; Samuel 1, son; John Colby 56, farmer; Harvey Colby 12. (It looks like this would be the son mentioned in the 1840 census who was not mentioned in 1850.
  • Vermont Vital Records. Page 218. Name, birth, death. One part of the same record says 2 June 1862, but it was the copy of the death certificate done many years later. The name of his wife here is Hannah Perham and she was still living at his time of death. Notes: Some information on death is 22 June 1862. There are a number of people in his age group with the same name in the area and it is difficult to tell the difference. Hopefully someone with further knowledge will help expand this profile and clarify.

PLEASE do not change the placement of the reference and footnote notations. 1/2 of the census data and other is lost if you do. No rule that I know of that says you have to have no space between "Sources" and References or can't have footnotes. Thank you.
