Biography

William Joseph Cole was born in Tempsford, Bedfordshire, in 1829. He was baptised on 4th July 1830. Census records show that in 1851 and 1861 he lived at Church End, Tempsford. He married Emily Talmash (1837-1912) in Orsett, Essex, - and her father, like her new husband, William, was also a farmer.

William's address in the 1871 Census record was Hungry Hill Farm, Pertenhall, Bedfordshire - and he was a farmer of 206 acres. From 1870-1878, the couple produced their five children : Elizabeth Emily, Mary Stuart, Eleanor Emma, William Joseph and Alice Sophia.

By 1881, he was living at Chichester Hall, Rawreth, Essex, and farmed 147 acres. He had moved again by 1891, and lived at no.2 Sidney Villas, Leyton, Essex.

The 1901 Census listed William as a "retired gentleman" living at no.5 Brandon Terrace, Ilford, Essex.

He was buried on 30th July 1911, aged 81, at St. Mary, Anglican, Great Ilford, Essex. His wife died the following year.
