T. J. Patterson was born Thomas James Collins in Waxahachie, Texas in 1937. He was an educator and newspaper publisher in Lubbock, Texas, and he was the first African-American to serve on the Lubbock City Council. Lubbock's Patterson Library is named in honor of T. J. and his wife Bobbie Gean. He passed away in 2022.
