Joseph was born in 1851 to George Cooper and Annie Brown.
Joseph was born in Uxbridge near Goodwood, the son of George Cooper and Annie Brown (both born in Pickering tp.) Charity Ann Shaver was born in Michigan and brought to Uxbridge by her parents John Shaver and Emiline Draper Shaver.They were married 21 Oct 1874 in Uxbridge. For the next 3-4 years they worked farms near Uxbridge.Two daughters, Olive and Alice were born at this time.
With free land grants they settled on land in Spence Tp. Parry Sound Dist.Over the next 30 years they worked the land here and they were fairly well to do.4 more daughters and 3 sons were born on this homestead of 99 acres.Of the sons Joe and Walter grew to manhood but Charlie died as a young child.Between the years 1894 and 1905, five of the girls- Alice, Olive, Florence, Emmaline and Annie were married to local men.In the spring of 1907 they moved back to "the front" as the older part of Ont. was known. Lumbering was nearly finished in the backwoods and farming was less profitable.The Coopers rented 2 farms above Stouffville on the 10th line of Whitchurch.For about 10 years they owned a farm on the 2nd line of Uxbridge. Joseph Jr. and Walter worked with their father and were married in 1917 and 1920 respectively. Joseph and Charity retired to Goodwood for the duration of their lives.
Joe and his "Chat" as he called her were a devoted and loving couple.He was an accomplished old time fiddler as well as a teller of stories and anecdotes.Charity was pleasant, jolley and in early years was referred to as "the pretty little Cooper woman"
