John (Cottam) Cottan was born in the Colony of New South Wales (1788-1900)
John Cottam was born in September 1867, in the Colony of New South Wales. Though his birth record lists him as John T Cottan. His parents were listed as Thomas and Eliza.
John Thomas Cottam known as Jack, was an Australian cricketer who played in one Test in 1887. After only one first-class match for the Colony of New South Wales he made his Test debut for "Australia" against the touring England team at Sydney from February 25 - March 01, 1887.
The death of "Jack" Cottam at Coolgardie at the early age of 29 saddened many of his old Sydney cricketing friends ; he was a born cricketer. Like so many young athletes he succumbed to that fell disease, typhoid fever.
He was laid to rest at the Coolgardie Cemetery in Coolgardie, Western Australia.
