Biography

William was born about 1817, the son of Daniel Courtney, a tailor. He was a tailor's apprentice in 1832, and when he married at 22 he was a cutter. By 1841 he is described as a linen draper and in 1851 a clothier. This implies he was a retailer or wholesaler, and his daughter Annie Maria told her granddaughter Nora he had a shop on Oxford St, where he sold hats (inter alia, but that's what stuck in oral memory). He is described as an outfitter in his daughter Emily's marriage record of 1858. The family had moved from Whitechapel to 294 Oxford St, St George, Hannover Square, in the registration district of Kensington. Oxford St at that time was somewhat run down, before the redevelopment of the later 19th century when DH Evans was built on that site, but it was a step up from the Dickensian East End, closer to the better sort of customer.

According to Nora, he remarried after his wife died in 1854, to a woman who worked for him, and his daughters had moved out by the 1861 census, the youngest to live with an uncle, Matthew H Mason, the two eldest into service. He is mentioned as clothier retired on Annie Maria's marriage certificate of 1885 when he would be 69, not therefore deceased (which this document would otherwise be obliged to state), but we have no record of his death. The 1854 and 1857 deaths are too early, as he is cited as an outfitter (not deceased) at daughter Emily's marriage in 1858.

His father's name is spelled Courtney, his Courtnay on his marriage certificate, and Courtenay on Annie Maria's marriage certificate.

I have looked to see if there are any possibilities outside London, but there is nothing likely. The problem with the above deaths is they are inconsistent with Annie Maria's marriage certificate of 1885.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:
