Samuel Coutant was born in 1768, the son of Jacob and Phebe (Leggett) Coutant of New Rochelle, Ulster, New York.[1] He married Margaret Hutchings in 1769.
Samuel was a farmer in Hurley, Ulster, New York.[2][3][4][5]
He died in Tillson, Ulster, New York in 1832/33.[6]

The Coutant family belonged to the Religious Society of Friends in Rosendale Plains, NY.[7]
In a 1915 family history, gr-nephew Rev. Anson S Coutan, listed their children as: Elizabeth (1790); Huldah (1791); Jasper (1793); Phoebe (1796); Benoni (1799); Peter (1800); Thomas (1802); John (1804); Isaac (1806); and Mary (1808).
An entry reportedly ascribed to a family bible states the subject's DY as 1833; however, Samuel's grave marker in Friends Cemetery, Tillson, Ulster, NY states DY as 1832. [8]
