Hayden Cooper Covington, son of Doney Covington and Mabel France, was born on January 19, 1911, in Nelta, Texas.^{[1][2][3][4][5]}

Hayden attended San Antonio Public School of Law in San Antonio, Texas and was admitted to the Texas Bar in 1933.^[6]

Hayden Cooper Covington married Marjorie Armstrong Mclernon on 30 July 1936 in Bexar County, Texas.^[7]

Hayden was invited by Joseph Rutherford to serve at the world headquarters of the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society (WTBTS) at Brooklyn, New York, he served there as general counsel.^{[8][9][2][10][11]} In 1942, Hayden was elected to serve as Vice President of the corporation, until stepping down in 1945.^[12]

On September 22, 1949, Hayden married Dorothy Mae Sennett in Arlington, Virginia.^[5][13] Hayden and Dorothy divorced in 1976, but appear to have been reconciled prior to 1978.^[14][15]

Hayden defended the constitutional rights of Jehovah's Witnesses in 111 of the 138 cases (1939-1963) presented to the United States Supreme Court as general counsel for the WTBTS.^[16]

Had the thousands of convictions entered by the magistrates, police courts and other lower courts not been appealed, a mountain of precedent would have piled up as a giant obstacle in the field of worship. By appealing we have prevented the erection of such obstacle. Our way of worship has been written into the law of the land of the United States and other countries because of our persistence in appealing from adverse decisions.^[16]

Hayden (67) died on November 21, 1978, in Pomona, California.^[17][18][19]
