John Cowan was born 7 May 1814 in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland to Alexander Cowan and Elizabeth Hall. He was baptized 29 May 1814. He was their 8th child. His parents had 11 children together and his father had another 9 after his mother's death.
He married Jane Gillespie on 7 Apr 1847 in Edinburgh, Edinburghshire, Scotland. Together they had 4 children. Jane died on 13 Oct 1854.
He married Jane Currie on 19 Nov 1857 in Bowden, Roxburghshire, Scotland. Together they had a son.
He died 26 October 1900 in Glencorse, Midlothian, Scotland and was buried on 28 October 1900.
