The following obituary appeared in the South Australian newspaper, South Eastern Times , on 23 January 1945. [6]

The death occurred at a private hospital in the city on Friday of Mr. Horace Stanhope Cowan, of Melbourne street, North Adelaide, at the age of 65. He was a member of the Stock Exchange of Adelaide. He was born at Norwood and educated at Prince Alfred college. In his earlier years he was a prominent footballer with the Norwood team, and played for South Australia. For some years Mr Cowan engaged in farming, mostly in the South-East. During the first world war, being ineligible for military service, he spent three (sic) years in France as a member of the comfort fund commission. On his return to this State he entered-into business in Adelaide, and later joined the Stock Exchange. A widow survives. There is no family. Mr Cowan's grazing activities were linked with the earlier history of the Millicent district. About 45 years ago he and his brothers (Mr W J. T. Cowan, of "Fernlea," Lucindale, and Mr. Les Cowan, of Blakiston) purchased the property known as "The Belt," at Hatherleigh. It was sold to them by Messrs S. J. Stuckey & Son on behalf of the late Thomas Guthrie, father of the late Senator Guthrie. It formed part of the Mount Graham station properties, which were then under the management of the late Mr T. H. Williams, of "Chetwynd." At the time of the purchase "The Belt" was in its original state, covered with tussocks, and the only improvement was a ring fence. The brothers with some assistance, handgrubbed the whole area and gradually brought it into production. Mr. W. J. T. Cowan later became the sole owner and until its recent sale to Mr. Harold McEvoy it was managed by his cousin, Mr.H. E. Cowan, now of Millicent. While living at "The Belt," the Cowan boys took a keen interest in sport, and played in competition games of football, cricket, and tennis.
