James was one of early assessors and collectors of Muddy Creek Township Butler County Pennsylvania. He moved there as young man to purchase 400 acres of government land. [1][2]
Early in the 1800s James settled on land owned by Joshua McCandless in Muddy Creek Township. He was accompanied by his brothers Robert and Thomas and his sister Rachel. His brothers each selected a tract of 400 acres of Government land upon which they settled.[3]
