Biography

Alexander Crerar was born in March, 1808 in Perthshire, Scotland, son of John Crerar (~1756–<1841) and Elizabeth Menzies (~1765–1855). He was born or baptised on 5 Apr 1808 in Weem, Perthshire, Scotland.[1]

Elizabeth's 1855 inventory mentions her son Alexander at “North East Hope, Number Thirty Fourth Lot Concession Upper Canada”

He immigrated from Perthshire, Scotland to Canada sometime prior to 1842.

Alexander and Margaret were married on 28 Oct 1842 in N. Easthope. Rev. Daniel Allen, Minister of the Church of Scotland, officiated at the wedding (per Huron District Marriage Register, p. 139). Witnesses were John Fraser Sr. of North Easthope and Donald Hay of South Easthope. (ibid)

Alexander appears on the Census of Ontario in 1851-1881 in N. Easthope, Perth. Data as follows:

  • 1851 - Farmer, born Scotland, 44. Margaret, born Scotland, 26. Children (all born Canada): John 8, James 6, Peter 4, William 2. Living next door to James and Catherine (Crerar) Stewart.
  • 1861 - Alex, yeoman, born Scotland, age 52. Marget, born Scotland, age 34. John, 16, Peter 12, James 15, William 12, Alex 10, Donald 8, Elizabeth 5, Duncan 2, Archibald 1.
  • 1871 - Farmer, age 43, born Scotland, Canada Presbyterian. Margaret 45, born Scotland. Children (all born Ontario): Peter 23, William 21, Alexander 19, Donald 17, ___lan 12, Archibald 10, Catherine 8, Margaret 5, Stewart? 2.
  • 1881 - Farmer, age 73, born Scotland, Canada Presbyterian. Wife Margaret 54, born Scotland. Children (all born Ontario): Donald 26, Dunkin 22, Archibald 20, Cathrine 17, Margaret 15, Stewart 12, Elizabeth 8.

Alexander and Margaret were the parents of 13 children: John (c 1844), James (c 1846), Peter (c 1848), William (c 1850), Alexander "Sandy" (1852-1933), Donald (c 1854), Elizabeth (1856-1867), Duncan (c 1859), Archibald (c 1861), Catherine (1864-1912), Margaret (c 1866), Stewart (c 1869), Elizabeth (second one by this name) (born c 1873).

Death and Burial

Alexander died on 18 Dec 1893 and was buried at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Cemetery in N. Easthope in Con. 2, Lot 21, Sec. B, Row 18-7a.
