Biography

Sergeant Wheatley Cropper served in the United States Civil War.

Wheatley was born in 1815. He was the son of Laben Cropper and Jane Rook. He passed away in 1883.

Wheatley was born in 1815. Although he died in Portsmouth in 1883, his family was still living in Lewis County, KY in 1880 according to the census. He lived most of his life in Lewis County. He served in the Civil War in two different units of the Union Army. He was a private in the 10th Kentucky Cavalry Regiment, Company G. That unit was active between Sept 1862 and Sept 1863, seeing action mainly around the Mt Sterling and nearby areas. He later enlisted in the 54th Kentucky Infantry Regiment, Company C, on 1 September 1864. He mustered in as a private at Greenup on 15 September and mustered out at Louisville as a sergeant on 1 September 1865. He died in Portsmouth, Ohio, in 1883. He was buried in Portsmouth. Whether he moved to Portsmouth before he died or was visiting his sons who were living there when he died is not known. His wife Elizabeth Jane (Frame) Cropper was living in Portsmouth in the 1900 census and died and was buried there in 1902.
