Biography

Mary Jane Crute was born late 1849 in Adelaide, South Australia. She is the daughter of William Crute and Elizabeth Barker.

She was barely 17 when she married 31-year-old miner, Matthew Shipsides, at the Registrar's Office at Pleasant Creek (Stawell), Victoria on 1st May 1866. The civil ceremony was conducted by Edward Bennett, Registrar, with the written consent of William and Elizabeth Crute. The bridal couple resided at Deep Lead, Pleasant Creek. Mary gave her birthplace as Adelaide, South Australia, and named her parents as William Crute, labourer, and Elizabeth Crute, nee Barker. Matthew, a bachelor, was born Nottinghamshire, England, the son of Thomas Shipsides and Elizabeth Burbridge. He signed the registrar, Mary gave her mark, as did the witness, Elizabeth Crute. The second witness, Samuel Shipsides, signed. ^[1]

Mary passed away 1917, her death registered at Dimboola with her parents named as Willliam Crute and Elizabeth, maiden name unknown. She was 67. ^[2]

I cannot find a birth in South Australia, or Victoria - Mary was born before civil registration began in the latter.
