Biography

Birth and Parents

Kent (historic flag)
Ann (Culley) Redman was born in Kent, England.

Ann [sic] Culley, the daughter of William and Margaret (Unknown) Culley was born say 1796 and christened on 28 September of that year at Otham, Kent, England. [1]

Marriage and Children

Ann married James Redman on 29 May 1824 at Melksham, Wiltshire, England, UK[2]They had at least eight children born and christened at Melksham, Wiltshire, England (cr. = christened):

  1. Matilda Ann Redman (b. say 1825, cr. 19 Jun 1825; d. 6 Apr 1874, Dracut, MA),[3][4]m. (Unknown Pead)
  2. William Chapman Redman (b. say 1827, cr. 2 Sep 1827; d. ),[5]m. 24 Dec 1856 at Lowell, MA, Margaret F. Cary[6]
  3. John J. Redman (b. say 1830, cr. 7 Mar 1830; d. 6 Apr 1899, Lowell, MA),[7][8]m. 1) on 3 Jul 1851 at Lowell, MA, Caroline Orrivilla Chick (1829-1853)[9]m. 2) on 27 Aug 1854 at Weymouth, MA, Roxanna Blanchard[10]
  4. Martha Ann Redman (b. say 1831, cr. 25 Dec 1831; d. bef. 1833),[11]
  5. Martha Ann Redman (b. 3 Mar 1833; d. 31 Mar 1907, N. Adams, MA),[12][13]m. Mark A. Pead
  6. Eli F. Redman (b. say 1836, cr. 9 Feb 1836; d. 20 Jun 1876, Lowell, MA),[14]m. 1) 1 Jul 1860 at Boston, MA, Maria E. Darling;[15]m. 2) 17 Nov 1868 at Cambridge, MA, Maria E. Ford[16]
  7. Enoch James Redman (b. say 1837, cr. 5 Nov 1837; d. 1902),[17]m. 3 Mar 1864 at Lowell, MA. Elizabeth A. Trafton[18]
  8. Hester Jane Redman (b. 1843; d. 1851),

Census Record 1841

The 1841 England and Wales census shows that Ann (35 years) and James (35 years) were residing at Melksham, Wiltshire, England with their children listed as:

  1. Matilda (15 years),
  2. William (13 years),
  3. Martha (8 years),
  4. Eli (5 years) and
  5. Enoch (an infant).

Missing from the listing of children is John J. Redman, who would be say 11 years of age. The enumeration suggests that all family members were born at Wiltshire. NOTE: Census image not available to determine father's occupation, or a birth/christening year of 1837 for Enoch when his age is listed as 0 on this 1841 census. It could be an enumeration error.[19]

Ann's husband, James Redman was born say 1804 at Wiltshire, England. His death was announced in the July to September term of 1850[20] and some evidence stated he was buried on 17 September 1850 at Wiltshire, England.[21]

Census Record 1851

The 1851 England Wales census suggests that Ann is widowed. She is listed as Ann Redman, 48 years of age, occupation 'Seamstress/Pauper', and Head of House living at Melksham, Wiltshire, England. Residing with her are children #Martha (18 years),

  1. Eli (15 years),
  2. Enoch (10 years) and
  3. Esther J. (8 years). All persons on this census are listed as being born at England.

Missing from this 1851 listing are children:

  1. Matilda Redman, who would be say 25 years of age,
  2. John J. Redman, who would be say 21 years of age; however, John was married twice, both marriages in Massachusetts. He married his first wife, Caroline Orrivilla Chick (1829-1853) on 3 July 1851 at Lowell, Massachusetts, so was already residing in the United States at the time of this 1851 census.
  3. William Redman, who would be say 23 years of age.[22]

Based on marriage and death location information for these Redman children, it is likely that they migrated from England to Massachusetts between 1851 and 1854. The older children, Matilda, John and William might have emigrated prior to the 1851 census given their ages.

Death and Burial

The death and burial information for Ann (Culley) Redman is not certain. Her profile at the FamilySearch search site indicates that she died on 7 November 1888 at Danvers, Massachusetts. Given that her adult children married, raised families and died at Massachusetts, it is possible that she accompanied them to Massachusetts. There are sources, however, that suggest 'Ann Redman' may have died at 1) Wiltshire, England on 4 April 1854 at 55 years of age [Ancestry]; 2) Wiltshire, England in 1854 [FindMyPast]; or 3) Melksham, Wiltshire, England on 14 August 1891 in her 82nd year [See Research Notes for these sources]. Of these three possibilities, the two deaths for 1854 are most consistent and should be considered as logical death dates and locations. The third option is less probable given her pauper status on the 1851 census and all of her children having moved to Massachusetts.
