Biography

Walter Culpeper of Goudhurst, Bayhall & Hardreshull "Squire of Agincourt"* (1398-1462)

The IPM for Walter's sister Joyce indicates that Walter was born by 1 March 1398/99. [1]

In about 1425, Walter married Agnes Roper, the young and childless widow of John Bedgebury. Through this marriage, the estate of Bedgebury came into the Culpeper family where it remained for about 250 years.[2]

He was named in the will of his father. [3]

In 1434 he appeared in a list of gentlemen of Kent. Then in 1450 he appeared in a list of the adherents of Jack Cade, the leader of a popular revolt against the government, that took place mostly in the south of England. [4]

Walter and his wife Agnes were buried at Bedgebury Chapel of St. Mary's Church, Goudhurst. A monumental brass in Goudhurst Church describes him as a son of Sir Thomas Culpeper. He is there stated to have died in 1462 and his wife Agnes Roper in 1457.

Latin: "Orate pro animabus Walteri Culpeper Ar. et Agnetis vxoris sue qui quidem Walterus erat filius Thome Culpeper militis, et predicta Agnes erat filia Edmundi Robar iuxta Cantuar. et predicta Agnes obiit 2. die Decemb. Ann. Dom. 1457. et predictus Walt. obiit 24. Nouemb. 1462. quorum animabus."

English: "Pray for the souls of Walter Culpeper Ar. Walter and Agnes, his wife, who was the son of Thomas Culpeper, soldier, and, according to the aforesaid Agnes was the daughter of Edmund Roper of Canterbury, the 2nd day of December, and the aforesaid Agnes died. Ann. Dom. 1457. And he said Walt died 24. Nouemb. 1462. Their lives"[5]

According to the 1619 Kent visitation, Walter's father was John, not Thomas
