Biography

James Cunningham was likely born about Jan 1756.[1] He may have been born in Augusta County, Colony of Virginia and may be the son of Jacob Cunningham (see research notes).
1776 Project
James Cunningham performed Patriotic Service in Virginia in the American Revolution.

James Cunningham was in the Virginia Militia and served in the American Revolutionary War. For about 5 months beginning in August 1775, he was a volunteer in the Virginia Militia guarding the Virginia western frontier against the Indians. For about 7 months beginning in May 1776, he was again called into militia service to guard the frontier, during which time they defeated the Indians at Long Island on the Holston River. For about 5 months beginning in the fall of 1780, he was a militia wagoner hauling lead from Chisel's Mines in Virginia to General Green's army in Salisbury, North Carolina.[1][2][3]

James Cunningham married Elizabeth Gillespie on 22 Mar 1781 in Washington County, Virginia, United States of America.[4][5][6][7][8][9]

Their known children to date are Isaac[10][11], Mathew G[5][11], James[6][11], Jacob[7][11], John[8][11], Moses[8][11], and Charles B Cunningham[9][11].

James Cunningham received a grant of land from the Spanish government in Luisiana, Nueva España.[5][6][7][8][9] A survey of the land was performed on 10 Jan 1806 by Nathaniel Cook, Deputy Surveyor of the District of Ste Genevieve, which was recorded on 16 Jan 1806 in St Louis by Antoine Soulard, Surveyor General, Upper Louisiana in what was then all part of the Louisiana Territory.[12] The land was a part of Ste Genevieve County, Missouri that was eventually split off in 1821 to help create St Francois County.

James was a farmer in St Francois County.[12][11][13][14]

James Cunningham likely died after 4 Mar 1842[3] and possibly before 1 Apr 1845 in St Francois County, Missouri.[2] He is buried near Farmington in St Francois County, Missouri.[15][16]

Research Notes

In his pension application information dated 7 May 1833, James Cunningham indicated that he was aged "seventy seven years last January".[1] Based on this, his birth date has been estimated as Jan 1756.

In James' pension payment log information, the last pension payment listed was on the Missouri pension roll for the period ending 4 Mar 1842.[3] The DAR database shows that he died before 1 Apr 1845 in St Francois County, Missouri but no source is given.[2] He is buried near Farmington, Missouri.[15][16] It appears likely that James died in St Francois County, Missouri between 4 Mar 1842 and 1 Apr 1845.

On p 88 of Lyman Chalkley's book: Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish settlement in Virginia, extracted from the original court records of Augusta County, 1745-1800, there is an abstract of the 17 Jan 1760 will of James Cunningham (proved 19 Mar 1765) from p 382 of August County Court Will Book 3. The deceased James Cunningham leaves 1 shilling to James, son of his son Jacob. The grandson heir James Cunningham may be this James Cunningham.

Some family trees label him as James Weir Cunningham, who appears to have been another James Cunningham, living in Randolph County, Missouri at same time as our James Cunningham in St. Francois County; too distant at same time to be same person.

The DAR database also shows James' birth location as Augusta County, Virginia but no source is given.[2]
