Francis E. Cygan, 92, of Suffield, passed peacefully from this life on Sunday, Sept. 20, 2009.
He was born in Thompsonville, on Jan. 20, 1917. He served in World War II, as a master sergeant in the 290th Infantry Regiment (communications chief). He supervised a communication section in the installation, operation and maintenance of communications facilities. He supervised the laying, testing, and maintenance of wire, spending 34 months overseas in the European Theater of Operations. He participated in campaigns and battles in Tunisia, Naples Foggia, Rome Arno, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He received a Good Conduct Medal and European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon. He also was a member of the 11th Coast Artillery Band in 1936, playing clarinet. He was honorably discharged from the Army on Oct. 28, 1945. He worked for Sears as a TV repairman for many years and kept all radios, record players, and TVs operating for many family members.
He was predeceased by a brother, John Cygan, and sister, Anna Massaro. He is survived by his brother, Sebastian Cygan, and his wife, Lillian, and his sister, Mary C. Chittenden; as well as many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, Sept. 25, 2009, 10:30 a.m. in the chapel of the Nicholson & Carmon Funeral Home, 443 East St. (Route 159) Suffield. Burial with military honors will follow in Connecticut State Veteran's Cemetery, Middletown.
His family will receive friends prior to the service on Friday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Vintage Radio & Communications Museum of Connecticut, 115 Pierson Lane, Windsor, CT 06095.
