Thomas D'Alesandro, Jr. was an American politician, mayor and congressman.
Thomas Ludwig John D'Alesandro, Jr. was born on 01 August 1903 in Baltimore, Baltimore County, Maryland, USA [1][2] and his parents were Marie Antoinette/Petronilla (Foppiano) and Tommaso "Thomas" Gaetano D'Alesandro, Sr. He lived his entire life in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. [3]
He attended Calvert Business College in Baltimore, Baltimore County, Maryland, USA and worked as an insurance and real estate broker.
From 1926 to 1933 he served as a member of the Maryland State House of Delegates.
He was appointed as General Deputy Collector of Internal Revenue and served from 1933–1934.
He was elected to serve on the Baltimore City Council from 1935 to 1938.
He was then elected to the 76th Congress and to the four succeeding Congresses, serving from 03 January 1939, until he resigned on 16 May 1947.
Following his service in Congress he was Mayor of Baltimore for 12 years from May 1947 to May 1959.
President John F. Kennedy appointed him to serve on the Federal Renegotiation Board from 1961-1969.
He passed away on 23 Aug 1987 [2][6] and was buried at New Cathedral Cemetery in Baltimore, Baltimore City, Maryland, USA. [7][8]
His daughter Nancy (D'Alesandro) Pelosi, was also a politican who served as the 52nd speaker of the United States House of Representatives from 2007 to 2011 and again from 2019 to 2023. A member of the Democratic Party, she was the first woman elected as U.S. House Speaker and the first woman to lead a major political party in either chamber of Congress, leading the House Democrats from 2003 to 2023.
