William Knox D'Arcy was born at Newton Abbot, Devonshire, England in 1849, the son of William Francis D'Arcy and Elizabeth Bradford.[1][2]
He migrated to Australia in 1866, with his family, where his father began his practice as a Solicitor, in Rockhampton.

In 1882, he joined a syndicate to develop the Mount Morgan Mine leases, the mine was the largest natural goldmine in the southern hemisphere, founded by the Morgan brothers.
Elena died in 1897.
In 1899, William married in London to Ernestine Boucicault, widow of John Bligh Nutting.[3][4][5]
In 1901, William was living at Stanmore Hall, with Nina, William and Lionel, and Constance Nutting, Nina's sister, who married Phillip Henry Nutting in Queensland, in 1880..[6]
D'Arcy used his new found wealth to fund oil exploration in Persia. Oil was discovered in 1908, and the Anglo Persian Oil Company commenced operations, later becoming The British Petroleum Company.
William passed away in 1917.[7]
