Biography

John was baptised on 15 January 1642/3 at St Mary's Church, Rotherhithe, Surrey, England ('Johannes' Daniell, father 'Johannes' Daniell). His brother Robert was later baptised 1 Apr 1647 at the same church, son of John and Sarah 'Danielle'. Their father John was a sea captain. [1]

John's letterbook is in the Kent Archives, England. This book has copies of letters sent to his brother Robert Daniell who became Governor of South Carolina; and also has records about John's own ship, the New London. (see below) [2]

The brothers John and Robert Daniell had the same coat of arms (Argent, a pale fusilly sable), which is also the coat of arms of the Daniel family of Chester. [3] [4]

In about 1660 he came into possession of the manor St Mary Hoo (St Mary Hall, St Mary Hoo, Kent, England). 'Sir William Wiseman, of Rivenhall was created a baronet in 1660, who alienated this manor [St Mary Hoo] to Captain John Daniel. His daughter and Heir carried it in marriage to Mr Thomas Faunce'.[3]

Marriage: The Marriage licence of 08 April 1665 has John Daniell, of Greenwich, Kent, Mariner, Bachelor, 22, & Judith Curtis, Spinster, about 20, daughter of Joseph Curtis, of Lewisham in said county, Gentleman, who consents; at Lee or Lewisham, Kent.[5]

They had children:

  • John, died 1709 Strood, Kent, (Ann Faunce his sister was administrator)
  • Ann, possibly the Ann born about 1672 Greenwich (baptised St Nicholas Greenwich Feb 26 1671/2), she married Thomas Faunce, d. 1750 (note age 82 on her MI, so born 1668?)

Exploration: In 1681 he charted some islands off the coast of Western Australia.

From 'Early Explorers in Australia', by Ida Lee (1925):
'The second English ship to make the Australian coast of whose presence off the Abrolhos a record has been preserved was the "London" under Captain Daniel, who came there in June, 1681, according to Thornton, Horsburgh and Thomson (Dalrymple places the date as 1687), and therefore Daniel saw these shores before his countryman Dampier.
Of his coming Captain Daniel wrote in his journal: "With the wind S.W. by W. steering by compass N.E. by E, at 10 a.m. the water was discoloured: a man at the foretop saw a breach rise ahead of us. We put our helm hard a starboard and stood away N.W. by W. and weathered the N.W. end of it about ½ a mile: at that distance the depth was 35 fms. white corally ground with some red mixed: next depth (about 2 hours after we tacked) was about 40 fms., the same ground, and at 9 p.m.having run off by log on a N.W. by W. course had no ground at 65 fms...The breach which we first saw happened to be the northernmost of all, there being several and by our computation are 20 miles in length. Within the breaches several small white sandy islands were seen with some bushes on them: a very heavy sea broke against the south part of these. When close to them the mainland was not seen."
Captain Daniel apparently saw Wallabi Group, the northern-most of the three groups of islands and rocks comprising the Abrolhos. He named it "Dangerous Rocks," He also may have given the name of Maiden's Isle to Rottnest Island, as it is so called in many old atlases. He made a chart of the Abrolhos which was published by Dalrymple, and, however imperfectly it may represent these shoals, it seems to have been the first attempt by an Englishman to chart the shores of Australia.'[6]

In Dalrymple's charts, 1771-1806 : volume 1, (see lower part of page 3). The Abrolhos Islands lie about 60 kilometres west of Geraldton, on the Western Australian coast. [7]

There is a marriage settlement for his daughter Ann in 1689.

Death: 21 October 1695 at East Lane Greenwich, according to his wife Judith in a letter to his brother Robert Daniell of Carolina: a copy written by her is in her husband's letterbook.

Burial: 25 October 1695 Greenwich, Kent, England. The burial was recorded in the register of St Alfege Greenwich: "Capt John Daniell In [or "Jr"?] East Lane".[8]

Probate was on 25 November 1695: John Daniell [Johannis Daniell], residence: Greenwich, Kent, England. His will mentions his wife Judith, son John and daughter Ann Faunce.[9]

John Daniell's letter book: (transcriptions by Heather Stevens, December 2019) - I will be adding more - Heather The copies of the letters in the book demonstrate the difficulty in sending letters across the Atlantic at that time. John's wife Judith refers to her in-laws as 'brother' and 'sister'. All the letters are copies written by John Daniell, and after his death by his wife Judith. There are no copies of letters received. The following are excerpts from the letters and some of the spelling has been corrected:

  • to Capt John 'Gouldsborough' (Goldsborough see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Goldsborough ) 31 July 1681 from ship London at Bantum regarding the estate of his brother Christopher: 'brother Christopher dyed with being 200 dollars, a diamond ring & a ruby'.[10]
  • April 1st 1693, to his brother, Robert Daniell of Carolina (It is a long letter, and difficult to read the writing. It is to be taken there by Mr [Guiward?] on the ship [fondsight?] at Spithead):

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
