William was born about 1787 in Sunderland, County Durham, England. He was the son of John Dawson and either Eleanor or Alice. (see Research Notes below)
He married Martha Hird on February 2, 1814 in Bishopwearmouth, Durham, England.
The family had emigrated to British North America (Canada) by at least 1836 because that was when their daughter Barbara married in Quebec (Lower Canada).
William died at the age of 72 on February 11, 1859 in Quebec and was buried on February 14th in Mount Hermon Cemetery in Quebec City, Quebec (Burial Plot R-86). Cause of death was palsy, his religion was Methodist and his occupation was Merchant and the church holding the burial was the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Quebec City. The clergyman was Rev. Elliott.[1][2][3]
