He was born on January 20th 1696, his birth registered at the Thaxted, Essex Friends meeting house, where his parents were prominent members of the local Quaker community. [1][2] During his lifetime he was variously described as a ’Sope boyler’, wholesale and retail grocer, draper and chandler. He was also described as a yeoman of Barley and of Stansted. [3]
In 1706 he received a bequest of twenty shillings in the will of his grandfather Matthew Day, grocer of Newport, Essex. [4]
On 18 Dec 1733 he married at Colchester, Essex Friends meeting house, Elizabeth Tayspill, daughter of Jacob Tayspill and his wife Elizabeth Cooper. [5] They had at least nine children:

In 1741 he was executor to his brother in law Joseph Johnson of Wendon, Essex, miller (husband of his sister Rebecca). [6]
He died 14 Jul 1749 and was buried in the Friends burial ground at Stansted Mountfitchet, Essex 18 Jul 1749. [7] He left a will as of "John Day, Grocer and Tallow Chandler of Stansted Mountfichet, Essex. [8]

To Hannah Day, my daughter my three acres and four roods I purchased of John Digby, lying in Hospital field, when she, Hannah shall reach twenty two years.
To Hannah Day the chest of drawers standing in the chamber over the kitchen
To my daughter Sarah Day my silver cup with two ears, holding about a pint.
To my daughter Sarah Day my messuage in Newport that I purchased off the widow Nightingale, with all the houses, outhouses, etc at age twenty two years.
All residue of my goods to my wife Rebbeca.

And if my said daughter should die half of my estate to me niece Mary Neatby and half to the child ot children of said John Day.
I appoint said John Day, Anthony Neatby and Thomas Pennystone executors.
