In 1870, the DeVaughn family lived in Fayette, Georgia. The household included Sandy DeVaughn, 26, mulatto, born in Georgia; his wife Mary, 23, black, born in GA; and their children, all born in GA: Bud, 3; Sandy, 2; and Mary A., an infant. [6]

In 1880, the DeVaughn family lived in Campbell, Georgia. The family included Sandy DeVaughn, 37, born in Georgia, (father b, GA; mother b. S. Carolina), a farmer; his wife, Mary J., born in GA (father b. VA; mother b. GA); their children, all born in Georgia: Alonzo, 2; William, 9; Emily, 7; Bud, 13; Luther, 4; and Mary A., 11. [7]

In 1900, the DeVaughn family lived in Fairplay, Douglas, Georgia. The household included Sandy DeVaughn, 58, b. Dec. 1842 (father b, GA; mother b. S. Carolina), a farmer; his wife of 33 years, Mary, 53, b. March 1847 (parents b. In 1910, they lived on their farm in Crombies, Douglas, Georgia. They owned their farm without a mortgage. The household included Sandy DeVaughn, 68, a farmer; his wife of 45 years (first marriage for both; married about 1865), Mary, 62, who had had twelve children, seven of whom were living; their children, Clara, 28, divorced; and Cara, 26, single, a farm laborer. All could read and write. Living nearby was their son, Luther DeVaughn, a farmer; his wife of six years, Martha O., who had had five children, four of whom were living; and their four children. The two adults could read and write. [9]

Reverend Sandy D. DeVaughn was born on Christmas Day, 1839 in Henry County, Georgia, the son of Elijah DeVaughn (1794 NC-1840) and Elisa Bailey (DeVall) DeVaughn (1805 SC- 1892), who married on 23 October 1823 in Abbeville, South Carolina. Sandy’s father, Elijah was the youngest of seven brothers, and served in the War of 1812. Sandy DeVaughn died, aged 74, on 16 July 1914, and is buried with his wife and other family at Tranquil AME Church Cemetery, Douglasville, Georgia. His grave marker is inscribed “we trust our loss will be his gain and that with Christ he has gone to reign.” [10]

Sandy D. DeVaughn was listed as mulatto in census 1870 and 1910; and as Black in census 1880 and 1900. He appears very light-skinned in his FindAGrave photo.

Elisa Bailey (DeVall) DeVaughn was white, per 1870 Census ("United States Census, 1870", database with images, FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MCSP-T8P : Thu Sep 14 18:40:57 UTC 2023), Entry for Milledge B Devaughn and Martha Devaughn, 1870.).

If Elisa’s husband, Elijah DeVaughn is the father of our Sandy D. DeVaughn, then Elijah likely impregnated an enslaved woman.

Elijah DeVaughn and Elisa B. DeVall are not on Wikitree as of Sept. 2023. It does seem fitting that today we remember Sandy and his family, and not the murky history of Sandy’s father.
