Mother is incorrect -- she should be Maria Lynch, not Grainne O'Carroll. This had significance, as it led to dispute between John and his half-brother Richard as to who should properly succeed to the Earldom of Clanricarde. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maire_Lynch
