Biography

Mary Matilda Dean, born on June 5, 1859, near Holly Springs in Dallas County, Arkansas, was the daughter of George Jackson Dean Sr. and Louisa J. (Shaddock) Dean. Her early years saw her residing near Holly Springs, and she was recorded in the 1880 census in Freeo Township, Ouachita County, Arkansas.

On December 2, 1880, she married James Washington Jones in Ouachita County, Arkansas, embarking on a lifelong journey together. By 1900, they were living in Freeo Township, Ouachita County, Arkansas, where they worked and made their living from farming.

Throughout the years, Mary Matilda Dean continued to reside in Freeo Township, as evidenced by the 1910 and 1920 census records. Her life was primarily dedicated to her family and the responsibilities of rural living.

Tragically, her life was cut short by a devastating accident. On April 6, 1921, she suffered a fractured elbow when her horse and buggy ran away, leading to gangrene and severe medical complications. She passed away as a result of these injuries in Freeo Township, Ouachita County, Arkansas. Her final resting place is at Holly Springs Cemetery in Holly Springs, Dallas County, Arkansas, marking the end of a life deeply intertwined with her family and the challenges of rural life in that era.
