Common Law Marriage

To understand Catherine, one must understand Common Law Marriage. If a couple lived together, and considered themselves married, had children together (or not), they were considered married under English common law. A ceremony or license was not required. England outlawed common law marriage (with exceptions) in 1753 in England, but not its colonies. New York outlawed common law marriage in 1933. No stigma was associated with common law marriage.
Thus, while no records have been found for Catherine’s marriages, (none may have ever existed) she was ‘married’ several times.
