Biography

Marcellus DEMO was born In 1818 in North Hero, Vermont, USA. He was the eldest of 7 known children born to Peter/Pierre Demo/Guimon and Marie Reine Julia Taillon. However, the Vermont vital records of this family were destroyed in a fire and it is primarily US census records that provide the record of this family.

Marriage 1

Marcellus worked as a farmer, and was married to Adelaide Ploufe. According to the 1840 US census, he was married prior to 1840. Together they had 3 children : [1] [2]

  1. Lydia DEMO (b. February 1840; m. 1859, Elijah Pawtraw ; d. 1922) [3]
  2. Auralia DEMO (b. 1842; m. 1865, Hiram Clark; d. 8 December 1910 ) [4]
  3. Selert DEMO (b. 1846)

Marriage 2

In 1848, Marcellus was married to Esther Bergeron Bashaw (daughter of Louis Bergeron and Marie Catherine Terrien). Together Marcellus and Esther had 5 known children:

  1. Ida DEMO (b. 1851; m. Joseph Patraw; d. 1921) [5]
  2. Milford DEMO (b. 1853; m. Julia Caturia; d. 1921) [6]
  3. Alice DEMO (b. 1855; m. 1874 Leonard Patnode; d. 1926) [7]
  4. Annis DEMO (b. 1858; m. Alfred Caturia; d. 1929) [8]
  5. Esther DEMO (b. 1864; m. 1886 Eli Hilaire Patnode; d. 1936) [9]

NOTE : Birth years of the 5 children above are estimated based on the 1860 and 1870 US Census.

In 1850, Marcellus, age 31, his wife Esther, age 28 and 3 daughters (Lydia, "Orrillia" and Selert) were living in North Hero, Grand Isle, Vermont. [10]

About 1854, Marcellus and Esther and their family moved to Dickinson, Franklin County, New York. His father and mother and most of Marcellus' siblings moved there too.

In 1859, Marcellus' father, Peter Demo, died in Dickinson, New York.

In 1960, Marcellus, age 42, and Esther age incorrectly given 26 years) and 5 children were living in Franklin, New York. Marcellus' recently widowed mother, Julia Demo, age 65, was also living in the household. [11]

Death and Burial

Marcellus died on January 1, 1865. Marcellus is buried at the North Dickinson Cemetery, Dickinson, Franklin County, New York. [12]

His widow, Esther, remarried in 1868 and died in 1906.
