Richard was born about 1748, the son of Peter Dent and Mary Brooke. In 1776, Richard was single, age 28, and enumerated as head of household in Prince George's County, Maryland. Also in the household, identified as White, were his mother, Mary Dent (age 67), his sister Elizabeth Dent (age 49) and two young females: Elizabeth Hardey (age 12) and Elizabeth Welch (age 16). There were also 16 Negro slaves enumerated:[1]
