Biography

Clarence was born on 18 February 1894, in Berwyn, Chester County, Pennsylvania, to Christian Albert Diem and Mary Jane Davis. [1] [2] [3]

In 1900, he was living with his family on King Street, in Malvern, Chester County, Pennsylvania. He was attending school. [4]

In 1910, he was living with his family in Lower Providence Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. He was a laborer on a home farm. [5]

On 5 June 1917, when he registered for the draft, he was living at 1463 North 53rd Street, Philadelphia. He was a machinist, for Standard R B, at 49th [Street and] Merion Avenue. He was of medium height, medium build, and had gray eyes and brown hair. [2]

He married Ella Mae Sharp on 7 June 1919, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They were married by Edward S. Bowman. Clarence was a machinist, living at 4463 N. 63rd Street, Philadelphia. Ella was a clerk, living at 4284 Ariola [??] Street, Philadelphia. [6] They had five children, including:

The 1930 census claims he was a veteran of World War I, but I have not found any other evidence that he served. In particular, the 'Pennsylvania, WWI Veterans Service and Compensation Files' database on Ancestry does not include him. [7]

In 1920, he and his wife were living with his mother and siblings, at 1463 North 53rd Street, Philadelphia. He was an operator, at a steel mill. [8]

In 1930 and 1940, he was living with his wife and children in Upper Oxford Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. He was a farmer. He worked 64 hours the week of 24 March 1940. [9] [10]

On 27 April 1942, when he registered for the draft, he was living in Upper Oxford Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania (mailing address, Cochranville RD #2). He was self-employed. He was 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighed 140 pounds, and had gray eyes, brown hair, and a light complexion. [3]

In 1950, Clarence and Mae were living in Upper Oxford, Chester County, Pennsylvania, with their children. In the week before the census was taken, Clarence worked 40 hours as an inspector in steel manufacturing, their daughter Jane worked 40 hours as an office clerk, in steel manufacturing, their daughter Elizabeth worked 40 hours as an office clerk in steel manufacturing. Elizabeth worked 52 weeks in 1949, but the census doesn't report her income. [11]

He died at 8.00 AM, on 16 January 1977, in South Chester County Medical Center, Penn Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania, of natural causes. He was living in Upper Oxford Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. His usual occupation was inspector at a steel mill. He was buried in Pequea Presbyterian Cemetery, White Horse, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, on 19 January 1977. [1]
