Biography

Franklin Dietz has German Roots.
Franklin Dietz was a Pennsylvanian.

Frank, son of John Dietz and Susanna Luttman, was born 18 January 1843 in Hellam Township, York County, Pennsylvania.[1][2]

His family remained on their farm (valued at $4,000) in Hellam Township in 1850, when the household consisted of his parents John (age 45, farmer) and Susan Dietz (40), Franklin (3) and his sister Rachael (7), as well as a distiller named John Shupp (18) and a laborer Jacob Cromling (17).[3] John Dietz (53) continued to cultivate his land in Hellam Township in 1860 to support Susan (47) and Franklin (12), while his sister Rachael (18) contributed by her labors as a domestic servant.[4]

About December 1870 in York County, he married Clayanna Jane Dosch,[5][2] daughter of John C. Dosch and Charlotte Leber. Together they had nine children:

  1. Raymond Leader[8]
  2. Gladys Orlena (Leader) Hengst.[8]
  1. Violet Estella (Dietz) Gladfelter (b. to Minnie)[13]
  2. Charles Franklin Dietz[14]
  3. Florence Rachel Dietz[14][15]
  4. Mary May (Dietz) Gable[14][15]
  5. Paul Edward Dietz[14][15]
  6. Lucretia Alverta (Dietz) Zeigler[15]
  1. Phoebe Romaine (Dietz) Attig
  2. Helen Dietz
  3. Elda Leah (Dietz) Writer.[22]
  1. Myrtle Viola Dietz
  2. Malinda Clayanna (Dietz) Arnold
  3. Beatrice Arlena (Dietz) Shearer
  4. William Franklin Dietz
  5. Charlotte Elizabeth (Dietz) Myers
  6. Hazel Mary (Dietz) Krout
  7. Morris E. Dietz
  8. David Elwood Dietz
  9. Kathryn Dietz
  10. Llewellyn Dietz.[28][29]

After their marriage the couple relocated to the city of York, York County, where, in 1880, Franklin P. (age 33) was a grist mill worker to support his wife Clayanna (28), and children Mary Magdalena (8), John Christopher (7), Dora Susan (5) and Harry S. (nine months), and a maid servant named Lizzie E. Clinedinst (19).[37]

The household relocated to nearby York Township before 1900, when it included F. P. (age 53, miller) and Clayanna J. Deats [sic] (48, mother of nine, six living) and their children Mary Magdalena (28, servant), Harry S. (21, day laborer), Morris Alvin (13), Ameda F. (11) and Allen Franklin (9).[2] His widowed sister-in-law Amanda Virginia (Dosch) Tyson (age 40) lived with them and was listed as a boarder and servant. Amanda's daughter Mamie Tyson (1) was shown as a Dietz daughter, but is Clayanna's niece.[2]

Frank died 23 March 1907 in York Township[1] and was buried at Salem Union Cemetery in Jacobus, York County.[1][5][38]
