Biography

Amanda (Dosch) Tyson has German Roots.
Amanda (Dosch) Tyson was a Pennsylvanian.

Amanda, daughter of John C. Dosch and Charlotte A. Leber,[1] was born 9 August 1860 in York, York County, Pennsylvania.[1] Her parents had her baptized 19 November 1860 at the German Branch First Reformed and Zion Reformed Church in York.[1]

In 1870. nine-year-old Amanda still resided in York with her parents John C. (age 48, clerk in livery) and Charlotte Dosch (40), and her sister Mary Magdalen (15).[2]

Before 1880, the family relocated to Spring Garden Township, York County, where the household consisted of John C. (age 56, miller),Charlotte (49, keeping house), Amanda V. (18, works at home) and Mary M. Dosch (22, works at home), as well as William H. Shary (20, miller's apprentice).[3]

On 16 December 1890 in York, York County, she married Daniel Webster Tyson,[4] son of Jacob F. and Eliza Tyson.[citation needed] They had four children[5] before Daniel's untimely death,[6] including:

  1. Joseph Webster Tyson (1922–1978).[12][13][14][15]
  2. Betty Jane (Tyson) Brenneman (1926–1993).[16][17][18]
  3. Infant Daughter Tyson (1928–1928).[19]
  4. Emory Tyson (1929–1929).[20]
  5. Doris Louise (Tyson) Waltimyer (1931–2006).[21][22]
  6. Living Tyson.
  1. Eloize "Ella" (Tyson) May (1919-1993).[33][34]
  2. Earl McKinley Tyson (1929–1930).[30][35]
  3. Robert Earl “Bobby” Tyson (1931–1969).[36][37]

After just nine years of marriage, Daniel died on 9 January 1900 at age 41.[6] It would have been difficult dealing with her husband's death, a six-month-old baby and three more under seven years of age. Her father-in-law took in the two older boys[40] and raised them to manhood. The youngest son was adopted by his uncle James Tyson.[41]

Amanda (age 40, servant) and her baby daughter Mayme E. Tyson (11 months) took refuge with Amanda's eldest sister in York Township, York County, in 1900.[42] In addition to Amanda and Mayme, household included her brother-in-law Franklin P. (age 53, miller) and her sister Clayanna Jane Dietz (48, mother of nine, six living) and their children Mary Magdalena (28, servant), Harry S. (21, day laborer), Morris Alvin (13), Ameda F. (11) and Allen Franklin (9).[42] The enumerator had some errors: The family name is spelled "Deats" and Amanda is shown as the mother of only Mayme.[42]

By 1910, Amanda V. (age 49, mother of four, all living) and Mamie E. (10 ) were renting a home on Peach Bottom Road in Windsor Township, York County, where she was working as a nurse in private homes.[5] Amanda (59, cigar maker at cigar factory) continued to rent a place in Windsor Township in 1920 for her son Warren Jacob (28, house carpenter) and daughter Mayme (20, cigar packer at cigar factory).[43]

Before 1930, Amanda V. (age 68) and Mayme E. (30, cigar packer) moved to 126 East Broadway in Red Lion, York County.[44] Mayme had become the bread-winner, paying the $15 monthly rent.[44]

By 1935 Amanda moved into the home of her son Warren at 42 East East Avenue in Red Lion.[45] That household in 1940 consisted of Warren J. (age 48, house carpenter for a contractor), his wife Lillie N. (41), their children Joseph W. (17, new worker), Betty J. (14), Doris L. (9) and a three-year-old, and Amanda (79).[45] The record shows that each of the three adults had completed eight years of formal education; Joseph had finished his first year of high school before dropping out.[45]

Amanda died 4 December 1942 in Red Lion, York County, and was buried at Bethlehem Stonepile United Methodist Cemetery in Windsor Township.[46]
