Research Notes

Amite County, Mississippi Cemeteries (p 459) has the birth and death dates for him shown above (8 May 1804 and 8 October 1858), and their marriage date (2 March 1826). Her birth date is slightly different (March 28, instead of March 20). Same source listed at least two children:

  • Emily M. Dixon, born Nov. 4, 1832, d. April 22, 1896 (married Alex H. Kirkland)
  • Annie E. Dixon, born Oct. 10, 1836, d. Jan. 2, 1926 (married Albert Caston)[8]

Children

Seven children have been identified in his will although it is believed that he had an eighth child; Alfred that passed away at a very young age. His children will be listed here for research purposes in order to add notes and create profiles for children that have not yet been linked.
  • 1. Corp John L. Dixon (1830–1863)
    • John was born in Amite County, Mississippi in about 1830[9]
    • Married Margaret J. Toler on November 16, 1854; they had at least four children: Emily Dixon (wife of Thomas James Berryhill), Alfred Booth Dixon (husband of Mollie Jackson), Martha (Mattie) Edith Dixon (wife of Franklin Wilkinson), and Thomas John L. Dixon (husband of Lizzie Gallent).[10]
    • He enlisted in Company K of the 44th Regiment of the Mississippi Infantry in 1861 in Natchez, Mississippi for 3-years of the war. Age: 30, Height: 5ft, 10in, Fair Complexion, Blue eyes, Occupation: farmer. Wounded and in the hospital in Lauderdale Springs, Mississippi, 1862. In Camp Ballard, Murfreesboro, Tennessee in November & December 1862, waiting for processing papers for discharge as he is sick from disease, unfit for service and not expected to live to see discharge. [Office of Breckenridge Divisional Hospital, Tullahoma, Tennessee.] Died of disease at Depot General Hospital on January 3, 1863.
    • See Find A Grave: Memorial #5063216
  • 2. Emily Malissa (Dixon) Kirkland Powers (1832–1896)
  • 3. Eliza Ann (Dixon) Caston (1836–1926)
  • 4. Samuel M Dixon (about 1838–about 1916)
    • Born in about 1838 in Amite County, Mississippi[11]
    • Listed with his mother and three siblings (Jones, James, and Melissa) on the 1860 Census[12]
    • Believed to have served in the same company and unit as his brother John L. Dixon but listed as Samuel G. Dixon in many Civil War records which leads to confusion between another Samuel G. Dixon from Pennsylvania that served in Company B of the 10th Pennsylvania Infantry. Note that sources on Ancestry are mixed between the two men
    • He may have married M. E. Perkins on October 17, 1867 in Amite, Mississippi but that marriage record and sources after the fact are linked to Samuel Gilliand Dixon who is linked to different parents on Family Search[13] - it should be noted that he named one of his son's Alfred B Dixon which leads me to believe that this Samuel is the one we are looking for but that is just speculation at this time.
    • Exact date of death is uncertain at this time; the pension record attached to him on Family Search which lists 1916 is most likely for a different Samuel Dixon
  • 5. Jones Hilary Dixon (1843–1919)

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Alfred by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Alfred:
