Ruth (Doane) Nelson was born to Walter and Grace Doane Oct. 29, 1915 at Beloit, Kansas. She had three sisters: Faye, Eula, Madeen; and two brothers: Philip and Scott. Her family moved to Strasburg, Colorado when she was six years old. But just three years later they moved back to Kansas to Goodland. Ruth finished her secondary schooling in Smith County, Kansas. During high school she was active in music groups: glee club and the accompanist, along with bass player in orchestra. She completed an extra year of post graduate classes at Smith Center High School. After graduation she worked at the court house. In 1936 she married a classmate Ransom "Tuffy" Nelson and they made their home near Reamsville, north of Smith Center, on the Nelson family farm. They had five children, with one of their sons drowning in a nearby farm pond in 1949. After that sad incident they moved to Hays where Ruth began her 20 year career at the Hadley Memorial Hospital. She first started as a receptionist, then the head bookkeeper, a business office manager, purchasing agent, personnel director, and acting admin for the hospital. She was a charter member of the Kansas State Hospital Accountants Assc. and served as the second president in 1957-59. In 1969, Ruth and Tuffy, purchased a farm in southern Missouri and moved there shortly afterwards. For twenty years the farm was a paradise for all the grandchildren and friends to relax and work with the farm animals and each other. In 1987 they retired back to Kansas and moved to Smith Center where Tuffy golfed and Ruth took pride in her large garden, playing the piano, and pride in her Doane ancestors.
