Charlie was born on 22 Aug 1915 in Surry County, North Carolina to Robert Doby and Nancy Holyfield. ^[1]

On the 1920 Census he was 4 years old and lived with his parents and siblings in Rockford, Surry County, North Carolina. ^[2]

On the 1930 Census he was 14 years old and lived wit his parents and siblings on Old Mayfield Road in Tunstall, Pittsylvania County, Virginia. His occupation was "laborer" in the "general farm" industry. He was able to read and write. ^[3]

He registered for the World War II draft on 16 Oct 1940 in Mebane, Orange County, North Carolina. ^[4]

He enlisted in the United States Army at Fort Bragg, North Carolina on 9 Feb 1942. He was 67 inches tall and weighed 130 pounds. ^[5]

He was married to Clara Adell Snipes (~1917 - ) on 13 Sep 1947 in Guilford County, North Carolina. ^[6] They had two children: Jackie Lee Doby and Rebecca Ann Doby.^[7]

He passed away in Aug 1975.^[8][9]

  • After his marriage he disappears from the records. He is not on the 1940 or 1950 Census with his wife. I spoke with some of his family on 10 Feb 2024 and they stated that he disappeared shortly after Rebecca was born and they never heard from him and didn't know anything about him.
  • On the Social Security Death Index his last residence is listed as Los Angeles, California, 90019.^[8]
  • His death and burial location are not known. His name is not on the headstone with his wife.
  • He is not listed in his wife's obituary.
