Biography

Michael Doheny born in 1805 at Brookhill, near Fethard, Co. Tipperary, third son of Michael and Ellen (Kelly) Doheny, of Brookhill. He was the third son in a family of eight children; five boys and three girls. Both of his parents died when he was still a boy. [1]

Michael married in 1837 to Jane O'Dwyer of co Tipperary. [2]

He took part in the Young Irelander Rebellion of 1848, eluded arrest, and after being hunted by the police for some time, escaped to New York. He settled in the United States, and became a lawyer and a soldier with the Fenian Brotherhood.

He was a company commander of “Irish Pike Fusileers” in the First Irish Regiment in NY city. On 29 May 1850, the First Irish Regiment was mustered into the New York State Militia as the 9th Regiment. The Second Irish Regiment was organized on 12 October 1851 and mustered into the New York State Militia on 1 November 1851 as the 69th Regiment. Michael Doheny left the 9th and was appointed Lieutenant Colonel of the 69th. Doheny left the 69th to become the Lt. Colonel of this new 75th Regiment formed from new and existing companies as the Republican Rifles (4th Irish Regiment). The three Irish regiments co-existed until late 1858 when all three were rolled into the 69th. The 69th New York Militia was called up and sent to Washington in April 1861. After 90 days service, the 69th New York State Militia was mustered out and re-enrolled as the 69th New York State Volunteers. [4]

Michael died in Apr 1862 survived by his wife and a small family. [7]

He died 1 April 1862 in New York and was buried in Calvary cemetery, Woodside, Queens, New York City, New York, United States. [8]

Obsequies of Colonel Doheny - the obsequies of the late Michael Doheny, formerly Lieutenant-Colonel of the 69th and Colonel of the 75th N.Y.S.M. took place yesterday from his late residence in 18th Street, Brooklyn... died 1st Apr 1862, aged 57 years ... chief mourner, Mr Michael Doheny, of the Irish Brigade, son of the deceased with Mr John O'Mahony ...
