Biography

Narrative from Findagrave.com:

The seventh and last son of John Douthit, Sr. was born July 23, 1765, in the Hope Moravian community. He was 19 years old when his father died in 1784. He married ELIZABETH HILL, but the date is uncertain; likely it was after his father's death. The Hope Moravian Church book lists for Jacob and Elizabeth, two children, Catharine (born Mar 3, 1791) and Sarah (born October 18, 1792. Possibly a son was born before 1790, for the 1790 census reports Jacob with one male under sixteen in his household. (No name is given.) The boy was not necessarily his son; he could have been a farmhand. The two females listed were undoubtedly his wife and his mother who lived with her son and daughter-law-law after she was widowed. She named Jacob to be the executor of her will.

Jacob served three times as a sponsor for Hope Moravian baptisms..... Moravian records describe Jacob as a planter in Rowan County in 1792. In 1796 he sold to his brother Abraham for 140 pounds 145 of the 240 acres, he inherited from his father, part of the original 640-acre tract John Sr., obtained from Earl Granville in 1761. The 145 acres adjoined property owned by Philip Hanes, Martin Hanes, and William Douthit, an elder brother. The Moravian Records (Vol. 6, pp.2613-14) Quotes from a letter dated November 12, 1798... states 'Jacob Douthit, whose relatives have moved to the new land did not wish to be separated from them and sold half his land and returned (apparently to the Moravians) the rest.' This report indicates that Jacob planned to follow his kinfolk west. There is a Jacob Douthet on the 1800 Tax List of Madison County in lower central Kentucky. It could have been "our" Jacob but proof is lacking.

Another record of a Jacob Douthet in the new land has turned up in Lebanon, in southwestern Ohio, in Warren County wills and estates. In Special Sessions Book 1, page 97- headed June Term 1814- it is asserted that letters of administration were granted William Ferguson to administer the estate of Jacob Douthet, deceased. It was pointed out that Elizabeth Douthit, Jacob's widow, had previously relinquished her right of administering. Further, Warren County states evidence reveals that because "no property was presented for appraisement," one year's support, estimated to be $90, was "set off" for the widow and children. But the children were unnamed and unnumbered." [1]
