Biography

Eugene was born in September 1852 in Tioga County, New York. In 1855, he was Eugene DRUM “grandson” in the household of Henry and Hester (Jordan) Lynch of Candor, Tioga County, New York. He was the son of Sarah “Eliza” Lynch and her first husband who is unknown. [1] [2]

His mother married James H. Brown in 1855. In 1860, they were in Big Flats, New York, where Eugene had taken his step-father’s name and was attending school. He had two half siblings, Helen and James. The following year another brother, Jacob Brown, was born. [3]

Eugene’s step father left for the Civil War and died in 1862. In 1865, his mother was in Elmira, New York. She had remarried but was again a widow and had another child, 18-month old George Black. But Eugene was not with her and had returned to Candor where he was living with the Oliver Jacobs family in the old neighborhood. There’s no doubt he was working to support himself. The following year his mother died. [4] [5]

In 1870, Eugene was a Teamster in Dryden, Tompkins County, New York, living near his grandmother’s brother, Oscar Jordan. By 1875, he was probably the same Eugene Brown a “Poster of Bills” in the household of Jasper Manning in Ithaca, New York. [6] [7]

In 1877, Eugene Brown married Mary J. Perry of Caroline, Tompkins County, New York. In 1880, they were farming in Willseyville, Town of Candor, Tioga County, New York. They remained in the same general area of Willseyville, Danby and Brooktondale where they raised a large family. [8] [9] [10] [11] [12]

Their children were: Lillis B. (Nov 78), Henry J. (1883), Claude (1884), Eliza (Jan 1887), Jabez T “Jabe” (Feb 1889), Charlotte “Lottie” M. (Feb 1893), Martha C. (Oct 1894) and George W. (Aug 1897), and Eloise Julia “Ella” (1901).

Although the details are unknown, Eugene had a special relationship with his aunt Martha C. (Lynch) Burrows and uncle Jabez T. Burrows, even naming his children after them. In 1910, Eugene and his aunt made the news when they visited his cousin Joseph Delong.

Prospect Valley – Eugene Brown of Danby, and aunt, Mrs. Martha Burrows, were callers at Joseph Delong’s last Thursday. – The Waverly Free Press and Tioga County Record, Friday, May 27, 1910.

When his Aunt died in 1914, Eugene handled her estate.

The will of Martha C. Burrows of Spencer, was admitted to probate and letters testamentary issued to Eugene Brown of Danby. Estate valued at $1,400 – Elmira Star-Gazette, Wednesday, July 8, 1914.

At age 63, Eugene was still farming, near Brooktondale. [13]

Eugene Brown died June 25, 1916 in Candor, New York. He is buried in Central Chapel Cemetery in Brooktondale, Tompkins County, New York. [14] [15]
