Ellen Duffell, was born on 19 November 1858 (Reg 1859) at Gosford, New South Wales, Australia [1], the daughter of John Duffell and Ellen Crumpton . She was the sister of Mary Anne Duffell (1862-1866, Harriett Duffell, Sarah Anne Duffell, Theodosia Isabel (Duffell) Starkey, Isaac Duffell, John Duffell, Mrs Rachel Matilda (Duffell) Vidler, William Duffell, Joseph Percival Duffell (Died as an infant) and Henry James Duffell.
She married Joseph Couling on 19 October 1881 at Sydney, New South Wales, Australia[2].
Joseph and Ellen didn't have any children of their own, but when Joseph's sister Emily died on 2 July 1885 she had three small children. The youngest was a son, Alexander was ten months old, his sister Marion was three and his brother William was two. Emily's husband, Archibald remarried in December of that year, possibly because of having three little children to care for. Unfortunately, it was all too difficult for Archibald so Joseph and Ellen took Alexander into their home and brought him up as his own. Alexander considered Joseph & Ellen his parents, but took his Last Name at Birth as his middle name and when he married it was as Couling and his children all called Couling.
Ellen died on 23 November 1914 at Alexandria, New South Wales, Australia [3][4]and was buried at the Church of England Cemetery, Rookwood, New South Wales, Australia [5][6].
Note:'Even though many Genealogy sites have them having a son Alexander George Couling/Cowling, I can find no proof of this. The Alexander George Cowling who was born on 29 March 1896 was the son of Augustus Alfred (Alfred) Cowling and his wife Elizabeth. This Alexander George gave his birth as 29 March 1901, when he enlisted for the Second World War on 31 May 1940, in order to be accepted as a 39-year-old, as he was actually 45. Alexander died in the Ambon Prisoner of War Camp, Indonesia. [7][8][9][10][11]
