Betsy Dufty was born about 1833 in Devon, England, United Kingdom. She was the eldest daughter of William Dufty and Grace Piper.
The family, comprising parents and seven children, migrated to South Australia (Australia) aboard the Osceola, arriving on 5th April 1851. [1] Her mother shortly after died in childbirth. Her father subsequently married again in 1857 and settled in New South Wales, having at least another seven children.
