John Harold Duke was born on 23rd Jun 1869 to parents John Duke and Fanny Wright at Manchester. His extended family owned an organic dye-making business on the Isle of Man producing dyes from coal-tar. Harold was put to work as a clerk in the sales department which was the Manchester side of the business. Then, in the space of one traumatic year (1886), both his grandfather and father died. He became a travelling salesman presenting the options for the aniline dyes and organizing the orders for their clients. At the age of 25 he married Hannah Gaskell in Stockport. They lived at 9 Church Road, Heaton Norris. Later they bought a large house at 307 Bramhall Lane, South Stockport.
However, when he retired they left the city and they went to live at 121 Thingwall Road, Irby near Birkenhead. He died on 2 March 1956, aged 86, at Clatterbridge Hospital, Bebington, Wirral, Cheshire. His ‘effects’ for probate were valued at £2008 18s.
