Biography

Mary Ella Dunbar, daughter of Alexander Dunbar and Mary B. Smart, was born in Bath, Sagadahoc County, Maine, United States, in about 1867.[2] Mary had nine siblings. Here are the seven who are known, in order of their births: George, who was born in 1856 and died (before Mary was born) in 1862;[3] Annie, born in 1860;[4] Gilbert, born in about 1863;[5] Lizzie, born in about 1871;[6] Sarah, born in 1874;[7] Ralph, born 2 May 1876,[8] and Walter, born in Mar 1878.[9]

As of 22 Jun 1870, Mary and her siblings Annie and Gilbert resided with their parents in Bath, where their father worked as a ship carpenter.[10] As of 10 Jun 1880, Mary and her siblings Annie, Lizzie, Sarah, Ralph and Walter resided with their parents on Sommerset Street in Bath, where their father worked as a ship carpenter.[11] As of 10 Jun 1880, they resided with six of their children, Annie, Mary, Lizzie, Ralph, Sarah and Walter, on Somerset Street in Bath, where Alexander continued to work as a ship carpenter.[12] Mary also appears in the Bath home of her maternal aunt, Agnes (Smart) Woodin, as of 14 Jun 1880, as an "adopted child."[13]

Mary's father had contracted liver disease, and in Bath, 20 Feb 1882, he died, at age 56.[14] Seven days later, her brother Gilbert died in Bath of consumption, at age 19.[5] Less than two months later, also in Bath, her sister Annie married Charles E. Robinson, 24 Apr 1882.[4]

5 Cummings Street in Bath[15]
In 1900, Mary worked as a dress maker and continued to reside in Bath with her maternal aunt, Agnes, on Washington Street.[16] Mary's sister, Annie, that year resided with her husband and their three surviving children, Gilbert, Louise and Hazel, at 1321 Washington Street in Bath.[17] Mary's widowed mother continued to make her home at 5 Cummings Street in Bath in 1900, sharing it with Mary's unmarried adult siblings Lizzie, Sarah, Ralph and Walter.[18]

In Bath, 7 Feb 1901, Mary's sister Sarah wed 38 year-old James D. Tabor.[7] In Bath, 28 Jan 1904, her brother, Ralph, married Bertha M. Lakin.[8]

In Bath, 22 Jan 1912, Mary lost her mother to "acute bronchitis," at age 73.[19] In Bath, 20 Apr 1915, 47 year-old Mary, until then single, wed a 65 year-old widower, William Yule.[20] They had no children.[21]

Mary passed away, likely in Bath, after 1940.
