Joseph Duncan may have been born in Fayette County, Kentucky. Joseph and his brother Thomas Duncan were granted a land tract in 1810 by their father James Duncan and wife Elizabeth Strode. (Bourbon County, KY deed book H.) They divided the land equally between them in 1823. Joseph took the north side of Boyd's Creek and Thomas the south side. (County Clerks Office Barren County, Glasgow, Kentucky deed book J, p. 271.) Joseph Duncan and his wife Polly sold a tract of land on 14 Jul 13 in Barren Co., KY to John O. Morrison; and a tract of land on 12 Aug 1834 in Barren Co., KY to William Day. About this time they moved to Clay County, Missouri. Will of Joseph Duncan dec'd, Admr. Abijah Brooks, John Wilson and Robert H. Brooks, sec., 6 Oct 1837 book A, p. 239 Clay County, Missouri. John Ecton was named guardian of children: Judith Duncan, Joseph Duncan Jr., Martha Duncan, Sarah Duncan, Thomas Duncan, and Abijah Duncan Each child was to receive $1500. Probate Clay County Archives, CF1-3; CF 1-40. Polly Brooks Duncan remarried on 11 Nov 1841 to NIcholas Fortune born 1789 Ireland. They were divorced on 12 Apr 1845. "Marriage/Divorce Mary Fortune vs Nicholas Fortune, Circuit Court records, Clay County Archives CC Box 9, File 830. 9 Feb 1847 Nicholas Fortune vs John Ecton, guardian of minor children of Joseph Duncan, named Judith Duncan, Jane Duncan and Joseph Duncan Jr. 1850 Clay County, Missouri Fishing River twp, M432_396 p. 381 image 28 #1202-1202 lines 32-33 Mary Fortune age 60 born KY $100 personal funds, Jane Duncan age 20 born KY. This is probably daughter Martha Jane Duncan who married 1854 John Thatcher.
