Article Aug 2010

Left motherless at birth, Dolly Lindrum became the child her legendary uncle, Walter, never had. He said I was the love of his life, Dolly, now a spry 88, said. He adored me, and I adored him. Her devotion has not in the least dulled since his death, 50 years ago last month. She has always lived in the Lindrum home in Albert Park, worked in the original Lindrum's billiards parlour in Flinders Lane and ran a later revival in Flinders Street, now Hotel Lindrum. When her husband died, she resumed the Lindrum name.
Behind the family home is a purpose-built self-contained building that was Lindrum's practice parlour and still contains his practice table, among many other effects. It is a shrine to Lindrum, and Dolly is its de facto curator. Over the years, she has received countless pilgrims, doubtlessly as hospitably as she received The Age this week, with tea in china cups, lamingtons on a silver tray, but also youthfully wicked humour.
