Biography

Nora Pearl Durham was born in Texas on 5 December 1884 to Columbus Washington Durham and Rutha Ella Massengill. She married Charles Henry Nebhut on 5 November 1916 in Kaufman County, Texas.[1] She was his 3rd wife. Pearl died of a heart attack on 30 October 1970; she was 85 years old.[2][3][4] She is buried at Oakland Memorial Park in Terrell, Texas.[5]

United States Census History

1900: Pearl N Durham is listed as Daughter of Head of Household in Justice Precinct 1, Kaufman, Texas. She is 15 years old and lives with her parents and 4 other siblings. The home is owned with a mortgage and is designated as a farm. Pearl is able to read, write, and speak English.[6]
1910: Pearl Durham is enumerated as an employee in Terrell, Texas. She is 25 years old and works as an attendant at an asylum. She is single. There is 1 female officer listed as Head of Household, and 25 people, including Pearl, listed as employees.[7] See Research Notes.[8]
1920: Pearl "Nebbet" (her surname is misspelled) is enumerated as Wife of Head of Household on North Rockroll Street in Terrell Ward 3, Kaufman, Texas. She is 35 years old and lives with her husband, 2 step-children, and daughter in a rented home.[9]
1930: Pearl Nebhut is enumerated as Wife of Head of Household on Howard Street in Terrell, Texas. She is 45 years old and lives with her husband and daughter in a home that is owned and valued at $5000; they do not own a radio set. Pearl is a homemaker and first married at the age of 31.[10]
1940: Pearl Nebhut is enumerated as Head of Household at 207 Nash Avenue in Terrell, Texas. She is 55 years old and widowed. The home is rented for $50 a month, and she lives with 10 other lodgers. She is working on her own account as an operator, and the highest level of education she completed was the 2nd year of high school.[11]

Research Notes

From Melissa Arjona regarding 1910 Census: This has to be the Terrell State Hospital. In 1910, it would have been known as the North Texas Hospital for the Insane.[8]
